About Gordon Kahan

Guitar teacher, music producer, and creator of the Axesense Guitar Method. Based in Austin, TX.

The Story Behind Axesense

I've spent years studying guitar, music composition, and the way players actually learn. What I kept seeing was the same problem: students memorizing shapes without understanding the WHY behind them. They'd learn a pentatonic box, a barre chord shape, a scale pattern — but couldn't connect the dots.

That's why I created Axesense. It's not just another guitar method — it's a complete system for seeing the fretboard as one unified instrument. When you understand how scales, chords, and modes are all connected visually, everything clicks. You stop memorizing and start understanding.

I teach all styles — rock, blues, jazz, country, metal, acoustic, fingerstyle — because the foundation underlying all of it is the same. Whether you're a complete beginner learning your first chord or an advanced player looking to unlock the modes, my approach is always the same: visualize it on the fretboard, and it becomes yours forever.

Based here in Austin, TX — the live music capital of the world — I offer in-person lessons where we work one-on-one to build your skills at whatever pace works for you.

Teaching Philosophy

Visualize, Don't Memorize — The Axesense approach maps composition directly onto the fretboard so you can see patterns, not just memorize shapes.

Meet You Where You Are — Whether you're picking up a guitar for the first time or you've been playing for decades, lessons are tailored to your specific goals and playing level.

Frequently Asked Questions

What styles of guitar do you teach?

I teach all styles of guitar including rock, blues, jazz, country, funk, R&B, fingerstyle, and classical. Whether you want to shred lead guitar, master rhythm playing, or learn acoustic fingerpicking, my lessons are tailored to your musical goals. The Axesense Method provides a universal framework that works across every genre because it teaches you how music works on the fretboard rather than just memorizing shapes.

Do I need any experience to start guitar lessons?

Not at all. I work with complete beginners through advanced players. Beginners learn proper technique, basic chords, and how to read music from day one. Intermediate and advanced guitarists benefit from the Axesense Method's deep dive into music theory, improvisation, and fretboard mastery. I've taught students of all ages and skill levels here in Austin for over 25 years.

What is the Axesense Guitar Method?

The Axesense Guitar Method is a revolutionary approach to learning guitar that I developed over decades of teaching and performing. Instead of memorizing disconnected scale patterns and chord shapes, Axesense teaches you to visualize music theory directly on the fretboard. You learn how scales, chords, modes, and arpeggios all connect so you can navigate the entire neck with confidence. The method includes 44+ interactive video lessons on Soundslice and is available as a one-time $30 purchase with lifetime access.

Where are your guitar lessons located in Austin?

I teach private guitar lessons in the West Austin and Westlake Hills area. My studio is conveniently located for students coming from downtown Austin, Lakeway, Bee Cave, Oak Hill, and surrounding neighborhoods.
